How to Confirm Valve Size

01.

How to locate your water meter:

Go out to the front of your property near the street. You will probably find a round or square metal lid near the curb. If you open it (with a crowbar, pliers, or screwdriver), you’ll see that concrete pit that contains your water meter. This is called a meter pit, meter box, or meter vault. Outdoor meters like this measure all of the water coming into your home from the street.

If you don’t see it there, go into your basement or garage. In cold-weather areas, where it’s best to have the meter inside, you will find it next to the main water shutoff valve.

Some people have both indoor and outdoor meters (dual water meters). One measures the water used in the house while the other measures the water used on your property.

Keep in mind, the meter pit might have shrubs, vegetation, or grass that has grown over it. So you might have to poke around the yard to find it and then uncover the lid.

How to confirm your water meter size:

  • To find the size of your water meter, look for markings directly on the meter itself, often below the dial or stamped on the metal case. If you can’t find markings, you can estimate by looking at the size of the pipe connected to the meter, as the meter is usually one size smaller than the pipe. Alternatively, you can contact your water utility, as they will have the meter size on record or check the bill for any meter size reference.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

03.

Locate Your Water Meter:

  • Check the serial number on your meter matches the one on your bill to make sure you are reading the correct meter.
  • Water meters are typically found in the front yard, near the street or sidewalk.
  • They can also be in the backyard or basement, though this is less common.
  • If you have an outdoor meter, it might be in a shared meter box with other neighbors.

04.

How to confirm your water meter size:

  • The meter’s size is usually printed on the face of the meter or stamped into the case.
  • Look for markings like 1″, or 1 1/2″, 2”, 4” 6”.

03.

Estimate if Markings are Missing:

  • If you can’t find size markings, you can estimate by looking at the size of the pipe connected to the meter directly after.

04.

Look At The Bill or Contact Your Water Utility:

  • If you’re still unable to find the meter size, contact your local water utility.
  • They should be able to provide the size based on their records.
